SEIZURES AND EPILEPSY IN CHILDHOOD: UNDERSTANDING YOUR CHILD’S TESTS – INTENSIVE EEG MONITORING

For the evaluation of most individuals with epilepsy, no special EEG tests are required. For most such children, the neurological evaluation, an EEG, and in some cases a CT scan or an MRI scan will provide sufficient evaluation. However, in three situations special EEG tests are indicated. The situations are:• When the individual is having episodes that are not, clearly, seizures; when described to your physician, they do not seem to him to fit any particular seizure type. He will be concerned that these are not true seizures, but rather are pseudo-seizures.• Special testing is always required when surgery is even considered as a possibility. The testing may indicate that the seizures are coming from several different areas of the brain, thus making surgery less likely to be effective. Alternatively, intensive monitoring may indicate that there is sufficient evidence of a focal source for the seizures that it may be worth initiating a series of events and tests which would help in making intelligent decisions about surgery.• Some children with uncontrolled seizures may benefit from intensive monitoring that might identify the type of seizure and indicate alternative medications.*85\208\8*
