ALLERGY BABYCARE\HOW TO WEAN: AS THE BABY GETS OLDER

Once a baby gets to about 12 or 15 months old, he or she usually becomes less tolerant of the sort of weaning diet described above. Babies at this stage often want and need less of a milk diet, ask for foods with more variety and texture, and are keen to start feeding themselves. They become much more aware of what other people are eating. They develop memory, wants and wishes and become aware of the rotation if they are on a rotation diet.

How you deal with introducing foods now depends a great deal on the temperament of the child, your family situation, any childcare arrangements, and, importantly, on how sensitive the child actually is. If the child is extremely sensitive to foods and has very few foods that he or she tolerates, then you may have to continue with as strict a routine as you can manage. You may find, however, that a child who has been weaned carefully gets stronger as he or she matures and better able to cope with foods that previously were not tolerated. It is worth trying foods again on a 15-month old child that were not tolerated when first weaning, unless the child has had a very severe reaction, and your doctor advises against it. This may help you expand the diet. If the child is less severely affected, you may not need to keep to too strict a routine and can run a more flexible diet with less rigorous introduction of foods.
